- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion® Game of the Year Edition presents one of the best RPGs of all time like never before. Step inside the most richly detailed and vibrant game-world ever created. With a powerful combination of freeform gameplay and unprecedented graphics, you can unravel the main quest at your own pace or explore the vast.
The Oblivion Script Extender (OBSE) is used to extend the scripting potential of the beloved Bethesda game. The script extender helps modders make much better content so that the users may enjoy functions and gameplay mechanics that weren’t in the game. Modding, in itself, is a hard job to do and to make great content by which the community can get by is even rarer. The modding community is the backbone of Bethesda, and ultimately this is the reason why Bethesda games have extreme longevity in their games.
File Installation & Updating Optionally, delete the Oblivion.ini file inside of the DocumentsMy GamesOblivion directory to generate a fresh, reset file. Download and install OBSE and OBMM. Extract the Oblivion Reloaded files into Oblivion’s Data folder. Installing Oblivion Mods.: This instructable will cover the installation of downloaded mods for 'The Elder Scrolls, Oblivion'.NOTE: I suggest reading any readme's that are included with your mod as they might contain crucial information or tell you the locations of the item/l. Install Directory. Where you installed Oblivion to. Contains game and launcher executables, and TESCS (CS4) mod editor; English Default: Program Files Bethesda Softworks Oblivion; Obliviondefault.ini. The default version of the file saved to your game configuration. Note: This seems to be the only ini file with such a prototype.
Even though their games have high content, great dialogues, and hours and hours of gameplay crammed into one game, the game always can be made better. The game is further enhanced when modders listen to the community and add functions, mechanics, and even new expansion packs for the fans to enjoy. The script extender helps in this regard as it makes the modding of specific purpose much more manageable and eliminates trivialities that modders face concerning Bethesda games in general.
Oblivion Script Extender (OBSE):
The scripting essentially helps you abandon all the rules set by the Oblivion construction set. With the script, the extender will allow you to add new weapons, new armor, new characters, new maps, modern lines of dialogue, and all manner of new engaging gameplay mechanics. The script extender will help modders change the whole face of the game. The script extender has given way for the creation of great mods such as the camping mods, combat mods, graphical mods. Many trivial things are also included, such as books you’ve read, which weapons you’ve used, which companions are where or how many locations remain undiscovered, stuff you can’t normally access in the game.
The script extender was released in 2011 and still one of the most downloaded mod due to its essential nature. Most mods depend on this mod, and nine times out of 10, you’ll have to download this mod for that mod to work. The oblivion scrip extender does not depend on any existing mod, and you can download it and install the mod in a couple of minutes. Join the thousands of modders that are making the game more productive day by day, or you can just download it so you can play the different Oblivion mods available on the Nexus. The oblivion script extender steam is the best way to set up your mods.
Oblivion Mod Manager Installation
The script extended is your gateway for enhancing Oblivion’s already brim packed content, and this mod will surely provide you with the ease of designing your own personalized Oblivion mods or install the already brilliant existing mods.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
The Elder Scrolls Oblivion is Bethesda’s fourth instalment in their open-world, action-RPG fantasy settings series known as The Elder Scrolls. The game released in 2006, taking place in the province of Cyrodiil. The game revolves around the protagonist’s efforts to stop the Oblivion gates from opening, which is that Universe’s fictional representation of Hell. The game is the open world that allows the total player freedom if they want to continue the main quest or frolic about the map and do their own thing.
You can join multiple factions in the games such as the Thieves guild, the fighter’s guild, The Mages guild, the Dark Brotherhood, or the arena. There are many more minor factions, but the factions mentioned above make up the bulk of the side quests in Oblivion. You’ll be running around the map, discovering new places, fighting monsters of all types, interacting with NPCs, and invested in the lore of the game.
You can level up your character by using skills related to the skills such as one-handed skills improve by the use of one-handed weapons. Your skills will determine a variety of abilities and overall strength of your character. There are three main attributes to your character, which are health, magic, and stamina. Each is increased when you level up, and the more you have of these attributes, the better your chances of surviving in this game are.

The role-playing mechanic of this game was the greatest of its time as it completely enveloped the player in its role-playing environment. The amount of customization you could do from the start of the game was incredible because, first of all, you could choose which race your character was from; each race had their unique traits. After that, you could decide how they look and pick the attributes they were active in. You could equip different types of armors and choose your weapons of all the kinds and make your own story as go along the quests.
The customization options didn’t stop as the modding side of the game took the release to new levels. Whatever your heart desired, the modding community made it. With multiple fixes and improvements done by the community, the game is still played by a large community of players only due to this single feature of the game. The modding community is Bethesda’s backbone and, as such, has improved on an already fantastic game.

OBSE Instructions:
There are three ways to install this mod, and all of them are listed below. The oblivion script extender installation is easy to follow through, so just be careful not to put any unnecessary files where they don’t belong.
- The mod doesn’t need any previous files, so just follow these instructions to get started.
- The Nexus mod Manager doesn’t install a working Oblivion mod Script Extender, so don’t even bother.
- The Oblivion mod Script Extender will work if you’ve installed DirectX 9.0c. (IF OBSE doesn’t work with a freshly installed OS, download and installs the DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime)
Disk Installation:
- Download the main file from the files section.
- Take the obse_1_2_416.dll, obse_editor_1_2.dll, obse_loader.exe, and the data folder and place it in your main Oblivion directory (the folder where your oblivion.exe presides).
- Start Oblivion by initiating obse_loader.exe from the oblivion directory.
Steam:
- Download the main file from the files section.
- Copy obse_1_2_416.dll, obse_editor_1_2.dll, obse_loader.exe, the data folder, and paste it to your main Oblivion directory (the folder where your oblivion.exe presides).
- Be sure you’ve allowed the Steam community in-game. If you haven’t then go to settings, proceed to in-game, and check the “Enable Steam Overlay”)
- Start the game with oblivion.exe or just stat steam and pay the game. The Oblivion Script extender steam will start with your copy of the game and run along with it. If you want to disable the mod, then rename or move the obse_steam_loader.dll. You do not need to run the obse_laoder.exe unless you plan on using the editor.
GOG:
- For the OBSE GOG, you’ll need to download the main file from the files section and also the GOG file.
- You’ll need to access the main archive and from there copy obse_1_2_416.dll, obse_editor_1_2.dll, and the data folder to your Oblivion directory. (the folder where you’ll find Oblivion.exe is)
- Go to the GOG Loader archive and from there copy the obse_loader.exe to your oblivion directory ( where you’ll find oblivion.exe)
- Launch the game by activating obse_loader.exe from the oblivion directory, and your version of OBSE GOG will be running smoothly.
Direct2Drive or Gamestop App (impulse) version:
This method is not possible due to compatibility issues with the mod.
If you think that the script extender isn’t working, you can always download the OBSE tester from the nexus mods.
OBSE FAQ’s
[faq cat_id=”4″]Conclusion:
The Elder Scrolls is a long-running series with one of the best open-world role-playing games of all time. The games have been brim packed with content since their inception and have thoroughly been improved upon each release. The games are excellent in their own right, but when dealing with the RPG genre, there’s always something missing for players. Hence the inclusion of modding and the creation kit was the best move by Bethesda, essentially giving the game in their hands and telling them to make their own story.
The Oblivion Script Extender comes in handy here as it helps modders from all over to make scripting and modding easier for every content developer out there. This mod has breathed in a sigh of relief for many modders as it gives them the ability to make anything humanly possible, provided that the engine of the game can handle it. People have even made a mod called oblivion blockhead just to fix the outdated facial structures of the NPCs.
You can download the mod and make Oblivion mods yourself with this script extender, allowing you to take your first steps in the modding community and later in content development. If not, you will still have the option of playing such great mods, all of them available on the Nexus. The world is your with this script extender, so be sure to make the most of it!

You may not need a full reinstall - if you think your problem is caused by a mod, you may be able to do a revert to vanilla - this will wipe your data folder, then replace the original game files with no trace of any mods. It does not remove your saves - and it is completely reversible - Link

Overview
Even though this has worked for many people, You get a disclaimer, just like the big software companies use to limit liability. This is usually a last resort and your game is already trashed. I cannot be responsible for any damage you manage to do to your game when trying this. You are free to use this procedure and post it as you see fit. If you make any changes, please take responsibility for them and document your changes so people won't blame me. As far as I know, no computer, game or animals have ever been harmed by the indiscriminate use of this procedure.
It is also a good idea to create a system restore point before making any major changes to anything in your computer. A system restore point will not bring back a deleted Oblivion, but will save your existing Registry settings.
When you uninstall Oblivion it doesn't really uninstall everything. Then when you start adding mods before you have started the game, some things may not get initialized properly.
The game uninstaller ONLY removes those files placed by the original install from the disk. It does NOT remove the original folders placed by the installer (Bethesda softworksOblivionData). It does NOT remove your mods, save games or Oblivion.ini or the entries that the original installation of Oblivion placed in your Windows registry. It also does not remove helper programs such as OBSE, OBMM, Wrye Bash, The construction set or any other programs you have installed in the Oblivion folder, data folder or the save game folder. In fact, it leaves behind more than it removes.
If all of these left overs are not cleaned up they can come back to haunt you when you reinstall. If the problem was caused by a mod, that mod is still there. If it is a bad or corrupt Registry entry, it is still there. If it is a corrupt save, it is still there.
Instructions
Here is my recommended procedure for uninstalling and reinstalling. Please follow it exactly, and don't skip any steps.
- DO NOT delete the Oblivion.exe or the Oblivion folder as that will cause problems when you try to uninstall or reinstall - allow the game uninstaller to take care of it.
- Uninstalling Oblivion - you gotta remove it completely before you can reinstall it.
- DO NOT DELETE THE GAME FOLDERS YET! This is very important. If you delete them,it causes problems later.
- If you have already deleted the game folders and now cannot install or uninstall, Try this fix:
Thanks to:HemmyLane52 for this fix
- Put the oblivion cd in the computer
- Just exit out of the oblivion launcher that pops up
- Go to my computer
- Right click the disk drive the the cd is in (mine is ;E) and click on Explore
- click on setup.exe
- Done!
Uninstall
Steam Installation Directory
My instructions assume you are using Windows XP and have installed Oblivion into the default location. If you are using Vista Win7 or Linux, the file locations may be different, however, the procedure will be the same.
For a full reinstall, first you can try to preserve your mods and save games. I recommend that you save them in a new folder with a new name. Create the new folder in C:Backup_Oblivion - or any other name you will remember, just as long as it is not in the programs folder.
Then copy the data folder where your mods are to the new folder - do not move or erase them, copy them. And in the new folder, rename the data folder to olddata. Then copy and rename the folder that has your saved games and Oblivion.ini, C:documents and settingsyour user namemy documentsMy Gamesoblivion to something like My gamesOld Oblivion - this saves your saved games and the oblivion.ini file.
![Installation directory windows 7 Installation directory windows 7](/uploads/1/3/4/3/134365755/708472659.jpg)
Now your original saved games & mods are backed up if you want to try to resurrect them later.
Then, using the original CD, NOT the Launcher on your Hard drive. Select uninstall.
After it completes the uninstall, reboot your computer - this is important as it allows Windows to remove some references to the original Oblivion.
Now delete the original game folder which contains everything
- On WinXP it will be C:Program FilesBethesda SoftworksOblivion
- On Vista/Win7 it will be C:Program files (x86)Bethesda SoftworksOblivion
The simplest way is to delete the Oblivion folder completely. The new install will re create the folder for you. This is especially important if you are installing to a new location on Vista and Win7. This will also remove all of the helper programs you have in the Oblivion folder. Such as OBMM, OBSE and some others.
Also delete the original save game folder located in
XP - C:Documents and settingsyour user nameMy DocumentsMy GamesOblivion.
Vista & Win7 - C:usersyour user nameMy documentsmy gamesOblivion.Again delete the Oblivion folder. This removes all saved games and the Oblivion.ini file So I hope you backed them up as recommended above.
Registry entries
Now to remove the registry entries that were left behind. If all else fails, this usually works to resurrect your game.
I do not recommend manually editing the registry unless you know what you are doing. A mistake here could make your entire computer unusable.
There are several good programs for removing left behind entries. The one I use is ccleaner. Be sure to reboot before using it, and again after. It is free and available here: Link
Oblivion Directory Steam
Once the registry is clean this would also be a good time to do a file clean up. Run the built in Windows 'Disk Cleanup' routine. If you used the ccleaner, most of this has already been done, but it won't hurt to do it anyway.
Now that everything is cleaned up and the trash has been taken out, do a full defrag on your hard drive to leave a large uncluttered area to reinstall to. This prevents your game from installing in a fragmented way, with parts scattered all over the drive. It also will speed up the install a little. It can take quite a while, but may speed up your game as well as the rest of your computer.
At this point Oblivion should not exist on your computer. You have a freshly cleaned and defragged hard drive plus a clean registry.
Reinstall
Again using the original CD, install Oblivion.
NOTE: If you are using Vista or Win7, DO NOT install to the default directory. Instead make a new directory I recommend C:GamesOblivion. Install Oblivion there to avoid the hassle with Vista UAC blocking mods. This is not a problem on WinXP so if you want to you can install to the default location. Or use the C:GamesOblivion.
Patching
Before adding any mods, patches, helper programs, Shivering Isles or anything else, start the game and make a save. This initializes some stuff that needs to be initialized, such as your monitor resolution, and creates a new Oblivion.ini file.
If you are using the Game of the Year (GOTY) version of Oblivion you should not need any patches, skip the patching part.
Now, If you DO NOT use Shivering Isles, patch the game using ONLY the latest Oblivion patch. All of the stuff from the earlier patches is included.
Be sure you use the proper language patch. If you use the wrong one it may work, but with a strange mixture of languages. (Germanglish?) Or it may crash.
NOTE: there are two English Patches UK & US and they are different. (Some people actually think we speak the same language) Use the one that matches your original disk.
If you use Shivering Isles, Install it now. DO NOT install the Oblivion patch. Install Shivering Isles, then ONLY the latest Shivering Isles patch only IF you do not have the GOTY version. All of the updates for Oblivion are included. There is only one Shivering Isles patch for both US & UK English (Maybe sometimes we do speak the same language.)Patches are available here: Link
Finalizing the new Install
Now, again start the game, make sure it looks right, move around a little to test it, and make a save. Test to be sure everything is working right (No purple objects or yellow blocks)
Back it up!
Oblivion Installation Directory Steam Installer
Before adding any mods, back up both your data folder and the save game folder. Copy them, don't move or rename them, to a different folder - such as BethesdaClean Obliviondata and Bethesdaclean Oblivionsaves. Note that this is a different folder than the one used for your old data and saves.
Note, Your Oblivion.ini file is in the same folder, but separate from, the save game folder.
Don't forget to reinstall OBMM, OBSE and the Construction Set if you use any of them.
Now, if you want to try to run with your old mods, first rename the original folders. The data folder to newdata and the oldata back to data. this restores all of your mods. You should now have 2 data folders data, and newdata in your oblivion folder
To restore your original saves and ini file, rename the new My GamesOblivion to something like New Oblivion. and the Old oblivion to oblivion - this restores all of your saved games and your original Oblivion.ini file.
DO NOT erase the files you renamed. These are your backup files in case the original mods do not work or give you the same problem.
If you have the same problem, it is most likely caused by a mod. However, if you followed the instructions, you now have a clean install to fall back on. You can You can COPY (NOT move or rename) the backup files back to what they were and be back to your clean install without having to reinstall again.
Sounds like lots of work, but you will have a clean install and a back up clean install when you are finished.
Now go kill some goblins.
